review 1: No plot summary is necessary (or possible) for this hugely known series. I love Martin's plot but have to say that his world building and his narrative frequently borrow too heavily from other sources. He is a fan of Tolkien's so I will assume that the familiar terms (wargs, etc.) and the extended appendices are homage. But he still overuses concepts/phrases ("boiled leather," etc) to a point where he feels like a kid who learned a new word and is trying to use it five time in a sentence. But nobody sticks a plot twist and twirls it with as much gusto as Martin. I'll reserve final judgement until book seven and God knows: I love the series. Reading the books and watching the series concurrently has helped each other immensely. Well worth reading (especially to clarif... morey and deepen appreciation of the HBO series) but probably won't convert any new readers to fantasy fiction.
review 2: I was unable to put down the first three books, and when I couldn't read them because I was busy, I was depressed. The last two I stuggled through the beginning. I read them together with a timeline chapter order I got on the internet, so that could have been a little of it. Near the end of both books, however, they got really good again, and I can't wait until the next one comes out.I highly suggest reading this series, even if it gets slow, just keep pushing, because it's worth it. less
