review 1: Beautifully written, evoking childhood in Cold War England. The story tells of how the children, Anna and Peter, try to make sense of their mother's sudden death or disappearance, their interpretations coloured by the spy scandals of the time. In later years, Anna returns to their mother's Eastern European home to try and find some trace of her, and connect with her past, but finds answers she didn't expect.

The characters were well painted & very believable, it was also very moving.It made me remember so many incidents from my own childhood & how believable fantasies can develop.It also illustrates very well the problems caused by adults not telling children the facts.
