review 1: A delightful read. It's set just after WW2 and goes back over what happened to the family estate in Romania during the war with German and Russian soldiers ebbing and flowing. Central to the plot is the deaf mute Augustin, and it's his struggles and interpretations through his drawing that is the focus of the book. I really 'felt' for him. It is a very visual book and gives a clear picture of events unfolding. Excellent.
review 2: Fantastic book. I couldn't put it down. I have been studying for a professional qualification and haven't had time to read for pleasure much this year, this book was the latest chosen by the book club I belong to. I have thoroughly enjoyed it. The plot line flowed neatly from past to current, and portrayed the horror of war and drast... moreic change in the simplest but thought provoking way. The shooting of the Lippizaner portrayed this horror of the approaching carnage for me in the simplest of terms. Augustin is a great character, I feel the author was particularly caring in her portrayal of him, such a beautiful narrator and I didn't see the twist at the end coming but was so pleased for him. less
