review 1: This was a beautiful book with limited amount of text, but makes use of shapes and colors to convey a message to the reader. I think it also has a nice theme--that it is the little things that matter most in life. The text is not complex, but I think the theme is. The illustrations are what I enjoyed the most about this book. The drawings are simplistic, with clean lines and free of clutter. The simple lines resonate well with the theme of the story. The colors used are vivid and intense--strong reds, yellows, and blues. I think this would be a great book for elementary grades as well as struggling or ELL students in the higher grade levels.
review 2: A man in overalls stops his delivery truck at the edge of a cliff and opens the back. A whole flock of birds f
... morelies out and away and he waves them off happily. When he returns to the truck, he notices a tiny black bird has remained. He encourages it to fly out and join the others, but it seems reluctant. After they share some quiet time together and a sandwich, the man demonstrates FLYING and the bird seems to get it. It rejoins the flock and the man goes about his business. But, instead of life returning to normal (however normal this particular activity is), the flock does a 180 and returns to carry the man off to wherever it is that they're headed.I'm not sure what exactly is going on in this story - where are the birds going, does the man do this every day? I liked the scenes between the man and the little black bird best. The illustrations pretty much tell the story - the one I was interested in hearing, anyway - and I could have done without the text. Make up your own ideas about what it all means. Kids will have no problems doing this. less
