review 1: Incredble book about the volcano TAMBORA that sent the world into a five year spiral of famine and strife after its eruption. Fascinating because they are just now putting the big picture together of how far reaching its destruction was. And it all occurred because Tambora simply changed the weather patterns. They called the next year...THE YEAR WITHOUT A SUMMER. Europe turned dark and brooding...crops didn't grow...but the list gets worse...famine, a global cholera epidemic, the growth of the opium trade, and the first great depression in US history. It even caused the first instance of Ice Age Theory, today's weather mapping, even the responsibilities of a state to take care of its citizens. There is a cautionary note about climate change in here as well but the re... moreal story is what you DON'T know about history. In the early 1800's when the skies turned dark and the clouds didn't break for months on end... many believed that the world would just get colder, darker and more inhabitable. The way the world reacts to the change is just as interesting as Tambora's connection to it. It may be the reason for Frankenstein which will be a much more interesting book than you first realized. This is a mind opening work....DON'T miss it.
review 2: Wood has done an astonishing amount of research to dredge up historical records that link climate, geology, economics, epidemiology and literature around the globe to the eruption of a single Indonesian volcano in 1815. If the long-range effects of Tambora could have all these effects, it makes me wonder whether other earlier and thus less well-documented volcanic eruptions have similarly influenced the worlds civilizations and ecology. The answer is most certainly yes. less

This is a highly scientific book, well researched, but not for everyone.

was pretty good, but still got boring, could have shortened it up a bit.

But does Gillen Wood still play cricket? I want to know.
