review 1: My upper elementary tween students love dramatic realistic fiction and this will definitely appeal to them. Nell's home life isn't quite all it's cracked up to be and while her friend Lydia has it slightly better, she's got issues too. When the two of them decide to spend every day during the summer on an abandoned golf course, they learn more about life, each other, and even some new friends they meet along the way. A solid middle-grade read and will be definitely added to my school library.
review 2: I enjoyed this book, and always struggle with an ending like this: it is a real life ending. Everything isn't neatly wrapped up, there are still people struggling in not real great situations. So it isn't satisfying in that way (but it is more realistic than
... more electricity and running water at a long-ago bankrupt golf course) but I think that gives it more authenticity - if you are a kid living a less than ideal life, you know it doesn't magically all get better for everyone. The mother isn't violent or terribly cruel; I would be fine with any of my 5th graders reading it. Grade 5+ Read May, 2014 less

Family. Self. And how they both exist. Of course with a little help from friends, old and new.

Wowza, I loved this book! Why wasn't there anything like this when I was a tween?
