review 1: I really couldn't summarize this book if I tried. It's one of those UF books where the author throws in everything but the kitchen sink in terms of paranormal creatures, yet somehow she makes it all hang together and work. The lead character, Vicki, was only slightly snarky, which was a good thing because I'm a bit tired of the recent trend of snappy one-liners substituting for character development. Vicki is an interesting and engaging character with a solid moral compass that guides her to always do the right thing when she's faced with an uncertain situation. I found the book to be quite funny, but be warned that there were lots of tongue-in-cheek religious references in this book that might offend readers who take their religion very seriously. There is some romance bu... moret it's definitely not the main focus of the plot and it doesn't play out at all like you think it's going to at the beginning of the book. My biggest criticism is that there were a fair amount of what felt like info-dumps, mainly because there was just so much going on that had to be explained. They didn't really bog down the book, but they were definitely there. Still, I had a great time reading this book and when I finished, I immediately went to the author's website to see if there was any info on the next one (I didn't find anything, but hopefully there will be more).
review 2: A great urban fantasy by one of my favorite authors, who is more known for her great science fiction romance stories about aliens, this book is set in a world of angels, werewolves, vampires, zombies and the like. I liked the inventive world and all the great characters, especially Victoria Wolfe, the werewolf cop for the human world and the investigator for Necropolis, the paranormal world humans know nothing about. This was a funny, action filled romp through a very different reality, with Vickie battling evil beings intent on taking over both worlds. Only Vickie and her team of supernatural beings (including lots of deceased well known historical figures like Martin Luther, Shakespeare, Edgar Allen Poe and even Jim Morrison and Freddy Mercury, who apparently are still around in Necropolis) are there to save everyone from the worst baddie of them all, The Prince of Darkness. I’ve come to conclusion that I’ll enjoy anything Gini Koch comes up with, no matter what world the story is set in, and I can’t wait for whatever she comes up with next. less
