review 1: Every time I thought this book was reining things in and being reasonable again, it went over the top ridiculous again. And that pretty well sums up the book. I came looking for something a little more serious, but once I put those inhibitions aside, TbaA is a really fun book. Not remotely plausible, in any sense of the word, but as long as you're just looking for entertainment value, you could do far worse. As for plot, no spoilers here, but there were some really cool reveals and also a ton of leaps of logic on our heroine's part that all proved to be disturbingly true. Our heroine's a bit of a Mary Sue -- everything she does in the story turns to gold, and every skill from her past ranging from high school track to aptitude with a can of hairspray contributes to her succ... moreess in degrees that vastly exceed believability -- but that's not really the point. Nor is the fact that she's very conveniently swimming in gorgeous men (and also women) who are impossibly perfect in ways that extend beyond their physical appearance...and yet, still need her to save the day. So yeah, the story can be a pinch maddening at times, but it's got great banter between the characters and enough "interesting" things happening that I really don't care how much it jumps the shark on a chapter-by-chapter basis.
review 2: Kitty Katt and Martini Really? Really? Yes really the stars of this book may have some silly sounding names but it encompesses the wacky humor Gini Koch shares with us in Touched. Honestly I rarely read "Ailen" but when I do I am often let down. However in Touched I found the humor, romance, and wacky characters were in a nutshell, awesome! Who wouldn't be enthralled with a kickass female lead and a hottie in an Armani suit? While liking most of the characters individually I found a few to be less than savory. Can anyone say "Angela" really mothers are not that annoying. The only parts of the characters I didn't like were the fact that the "love triangle" was never truly a "triangle" at all. But other than an annoying mother and some missed opportunities for character relationship drama the characters were great. Especially if you're addicted to independent, smart heroines and Possessive and Smexy lead men.As far as the story goes this is where the book lost stars. Honestly I felt there was too much explaining going on. Every other chapter felt like Alien 101, and really I would rather the history portion were mysterious solved through dedication of the main character. Rather than the heroine solving everything through common sense. Because if the "female aliens" were so brilliant they wouldn't have ever needed Kitty because everything would already be solved, because it was all common sense, everyone was just blind to it. So for the overall action that propelled the plot I have to say it was disappointing and a bit mundane to muddle through. But the cliche love story here is what i loved about the book, while a lot of people hate cliche it is honestly my guilty pleasure. Overall Touched is a fast read if you can make it past the explanation chapters. It has a lot of action and a cool men in black take on Aliens that provides humor and romance in a fun, and unexpectedly expected way. This is the first book in a continuing series revolving around Kitty and Martini, and the second book is even more a doozy than the first. less
