review 1: I wanted to bail almost as soon as I started. Hated the people. Hated the plot. Just hated it all. Miserable reading. It was like suffering through one of those bad movies from 1960 where Tony Curtis is wearing satin and a bad wig and trying to fake an English accent like he's Errol Flynn, only you can't suspend your disbelief long enough to ignore that awful Bronx accent, and you wish Basil Rathbone had at least gotten more licks in, just because. Yes, there's sex, but it's full of bad imagery of things like "stars exploding" and is more annoying than titillating. The weird bigotry and constant waffling also got on my last nerve. Harumph.
