Goodreads Synopsis

Life in the outer realm is a lawless, dirty, hard existence, and Solara Brooks is hungry for it. Just out of the orphanage, she needs a fresh start in a place where nobody cares about the engine grease beneath her fingernails or the felony tattoos across her knuckles. She’s so desperate to reach the realm that she’s willing to indenture herself to Doran Spaulding, the rich and popular quarterback who made her life miserable all through high school, in exchange for passage aboard the spaceliner Zenith.

When a twist of fate lands them instead on the Banshee, a vessel of dubious repute, Doran learns he’s been framed on Earth for conspiracy. As he pursues a set of mysterious coordinates rumored to hold the key to clearing his name, he and Solara must get past their enmity to work together and evade those out for their arrest. Life on the Banshee may be tumultuous, but as Solara and Doran are forced to question everything they once believed about their world—and each other—the ship becomes home, and the eccentric crew family. But what Solara and Doran discover on the mysterious Planet X has the power to not only alter their lives, but the existence of everyone in the universe…

Thoughts

I so was not expecting this!

After having this on my shelf for over a year I decided that with the year coming to an end it was about time I pick it up. And like I said, I was not expecting this to be as good as it was.

Now normally sci-fi isn’t my favourite genre. I’ve read a few from the genre and haven’t really enjoyed them, same goes for movies but this was great. It follows Solara Brooks who is basically wanting to get away to the outer realms and doing what she can to get there, including being the servant for a really annoying boy from her school and then of course things go sideways.

This was fast paced, well written and didn’t have a dull moment. I was hooked, not from the exact start but after a good couple of chapters I was obsessed. It was packed with adventure and humour and honestly it was really sweet and heart warming. One of those books that just makes you have a nice smile after reading it.

I read this while going through a manic week of exams which was stressful but this was a perfect excuse for me to sit back and chill out … and also at times avoiding other people in my class.

Highly suggest because: Space pirates, awesome cover, humour, sweet romance, great characters and world building.

Spoilers

I wasn’t planning on doing a spoiler section but you know what why not. I have a few things to say about the super cute love story aspect.

First thing first is huge round of applause to Melissa Landers for NOT including a love triangle. What is this strange feeling of not having to sit through chapters upon chapters of angsty pinning of who has prettier eyes or whatever. Thank you!

As soon as the parts were put into place it was obvious that these two liked each other and that it was going to end up with them at least kissing.

This was a Solara and Doran hating each other, him being a total jerk to her, her then becoming his servant so she can catch a ride on the posh spaceship, him then trying to abandon her, her basically kidnapping him. Then a bunch of stuff happens and they become friends which I was down for and then it developed into me actually shipping them.

He fought a space pirate for her. I think that’s when I started shipping them.

QUOTES

“If I get any closer to the wall,” he hissed, “I’ll have to buy it dinner.”

“I like waking up in sheets that smell like you,” he said, gentler this time. “And I like the little wrinkle that shows up between your eyes every time you look at me. When I think about giving that up, I can’t breathe.”

“Cheating death was exhausting.”

“Doran set it in front of her with a grin that made her want to slap him so hard his grandkids would feel it.”

“Discovering your purpose and making it happen are two different things.”

“The girl’s pilot.”
“And her lover,” Demarkus added.
“No.” The clarity of Doran’s voice surprised even himself. He glanced at Solara and said, “Her friend.” It felt strange calling himself that, but if combat with a seven-foot-tall pirate chief didn’t upgrade them to friends, nothing would.”

“In that moment, he wondered how he’d ever believed she was anything less than spectacular.”

“Ah, yes. Love—the great equalizer. It makes all of us stupid.”
