The Dopple Ganger Chronicles
review 1: I was very interested in this book b/c of it's unique IllustraNovel format. The idea is clever and the reading between comicbook and novel was seamless. That being said, I was struck right away by how disturbing and actually evil-looking the pictures are! I couldn't believe that Saskia and Sadie Dopple were the main characters in the book. They were terribly creepy and not at all likeable. All three kids, including the Ganger kid, are rebellious, messed-up trouble-makers. They dabble in seances and deal with murder. No "sinner" in the book seems to have any redemptive qualities in the end, and there seem to be no real consequences to their rebellion. The story is dark and it's supposed to be kids Christian fiction! I was shocked to read that the author has won awards and i... mores a minister. With such a platform, he could surely be putting his talents and godly-wisdom to use with books that will change children's lives for the better instead of possibly damaging their impressionable hearts.I'm not some kind of mom who thinks my children should never be exposed to worldly things, but I do not think rebellion, darkness, and occultism should be condoned. This book doesn't just condone these things. It seems to encourage them.
review 2: The First Escape is the first book in the Dopple Ganger Series. It is mainly geared to youth readers and is set up as a graphic novel. I think that this novel would appeal to teen boys especially because of the mystery and suspense that is built into the book. Though I am an adult, I found this graphic novel to be entertaining as I have the other works by G.P. Taylor. This graphic novel is about the twin Dopple Girls (Sadie and Saskia) and their friend, Erik Ganger who live in an orphanage run by uncaring administrators. The twins are troublemakers and after a fiasco, Saskia is sent away to live with an older lady, who has a secret of her own! Sadie, who is left to stay at the orphanage, gets into trouble and is locked in a room waiting to be sent to prison. However, Erik saves her and the two escape to find Saskia. While Sadie and Erik make their way to where Saskia was taken while avoiding the police after them, Saskia has discovered a sinister plot. The lady that adopted her has a evil twin sister who is in cahoots with the butler and a young woman, who happens to be her daughter, to kill not only Saskia but also her guardian. Can Sadie and Erik find Saskia in time to save the day? Well, you will have to read the book to find out. less

It was a easy fun middle grade read. I loved the comic added into the actual story. Quite cool.

Sort of a comic. Not crazy about the comic art, but a fun story.
