review 1: Grace Draven's medieval vocabulary is intense. Example: "A dense fog lapped at Ballard's feet and dripped thin rivulets of condensation off his aketon and the steel plates sewn over his vambraces." I think I'd need a specialized dictionary to parse much of what these characters were wearing, so I must give her props for commitment to detail. But that attention has created a well-crafted take on Beauty and the Beast, which is one of my favorite tropes. The characters here are terrific - not a Mary Sue in sight. The villain was a touch too mwa-ha-ha, but overall everyone else was nicely fleshed out. The ending became a bit muddled as the magical rules of the curse weren't entirely clear for me, but I ended up being satisfied. Also, I sobbed ... out loud. The whole story was o... moredd and romantic and unique and kind of heartbreaking. While this seems to be a standalone, I'd love to see more from the world she created here.
review 2: This is actually the first Beauty & the Beast retelling that didn't make me furious enough to throw my tablet across the room. In fact that is now officially in my top five favourite novels ever. If the Stockholm Syndrome-y-ness of the fairytale is off putting for you, rest assured you will not be getting that here. (Always bonus points for male leads who ask for consent and don't kidnap people).I swooned my entire way through Entreat Me, loved it even more than Master of Crows. I loved the absolute hell out of Ballard and Louvaen both. I really appreciated the sense of humour, honesty and camaraderie in their interactions. Not much else to say really, it's so much easier to write a bad review than it is to write a good one. Draven turns a beautiful phrase as always, her characters live and breathe, the romance is sexy, and her world is beautifully, darkly gothic.Just like stop reading this review right now and go buy the ebook. Do it. That is all! less
