review 1: For the love of Buddha, LSD, orgasms and microchips, read The Invisibles now! The fate of our ultradimensional hypertime continuum depends on it!Seriously, read this mind copulater at once. The omnibus is one hefty, unwieldy SOB, but it's worth it, especially to aspiring comics creators, for the inclusion of Grant's proposal for the series that he pitched to Vertigo as well as original sketches, etc. I also enjoyed the essays from the letters pages of the original comics. A very cool edition of an insanely cool comic.
review 2: Loved it. Some of the early artwork is a bit derpy though & there's an article in the collected editorials at the back where GM recognises that readers of the comic book hadn't taken to the monthly changes of artist, and proposed a diffe
... morerent solution. Later in the series you can see that the artwork was delegated among a team of very good professionals. Story-wise, this is one convoluted Gordian knot of a plot, but I like that. You have to remember what time zone each scene is happening in & try to draw your own cause & effect threads from that to some extent. It's a brilliant initiation into GM's beliefs & ideas about chaos magic and about cosmology, multi-dimensionality & so on. It's fantastically erudite too, quoting from Shakespeare & referencing Von Daniken, Maya Deren's books on Voodoo, the Tibetan book of the Dead, Mayan & Incan beliefs, Nagualism, Hinduism, you name it. I love the way that one shaman character as they exit normal reality everything seems flat & 2D, and when the end of the world comes they break the 4th wall & you realise, to the comic book world, our world is the extradimensional world of the Gods - an analogy for the extradimensional world of our own Gods, angels etc. The way the whole thing hangs together is fantastic - a major story arc of 6 years in real time, as it came out every month, something worthy of a J Michael Straczynski major story arc. The fore & back-references are just, wow. This is going to stand some re-reading I can see. less

Read it and then read it again. You still haven't caught everything. Monumental genius.
