review 1: I thought this was a helpful critique. I began this book with a bit of suspicion. In many ways this book does follow the typical generic stereotypes that are prevalent in common evangelicalism. Some of those are genuine and have been created by problems of misunderstanding the heart of the theology of "Calvinism." The worst of a movement can make a mess out of the best of a movement. I think it is great to refute those, "Calvinists" that may display the character traits of fictitious "Calvinism." The best thing about this book in the end is that it redirects those on the outside to helpful dialogue that doesn't turn into constant personal slams. This corrects those on the outside of the movement by making them at least deal with their constant misrepresentations of a view ... moreof soteriology that doesn't in fact represent an actual warm bodied person. I have found it best to deal with actual people instead of our constant expectations of what they may think. If you feel like you know somebody like this you can at least engage them with the thoughts of "Calvinists" against their poor understanding. It also corrects those on the inside in obvious intended ways and the main thesis of the book works well. I felt this book may have severe limitations but in the end I think it would be just as if "non-calvinists" pick it up and read. It is short and would at least provide you with something to hand a person that you feel represents something negative within the "Calvinist" stream. If would also help you to see that people are attempting to think critically and aren't jumping into to stuff blindly. Great book!
review 2: This book hits the nail on the head. To often when we stumble upon and embrace Biblical truth or what we are convinced is Biblical truth we can kill what we say we love. This seems to be especially true of those who consider themsleves Calvinists or Reformed in their theology. This book will set one straight. The author covers 8 areas, all 8 are some combination of pride and/or simply a lack of careful thinking. Good, hard-hitting, quick read. less
