review 1: For starters, I am a huge Beatles fan, so the title intrigued me. Was this about how the Beatles' fame and fortune affected their wives/girlfriends? Or an alternate-history novel where the Beatles had a fifth member, a girl? While I would gladly read either of those books, The Girl Who Became a Beatle is the tale of Regina, a high-school girl and fellow Beatles fan who makes a wish that her band was as famous as the Beatles. She wakes up the next morning to find that her band has replaced the Beatles, only now they're famous in the modern day instead of the sixties. This book makes some very interesting commentary about the superficial me-me-me-ness of today's celebrity culture, and the author could have gone on so many fascinating tangents on this topic, but he doesn't. ... more Also, while Greg Taylor tries to convey the feeling of music through description, he can't quite write it well enough, because music is obviously about listening and the personal interpretation one has when listening. You can't have a soundtrack embedded in the pages of a novel, that would be impossible! Or would it? *goes off to patent idea* Thirdly, there are wayyyy too many current references in this book. In a couple of years this novel will either become laughably outdated or sweetly nostalgic because of all of the of-the-moment musicians, products, and media mentioned. Ever read a book from the 90's where the character tout the wonderfulness of Walkmans?(Walkmen?) Yeah, that sort of thing is a definite How Not to Write A Good Novel. But for all of my bashing, The Girl Who Became a Beatle is still a nice, offbeat little story I would reccomend to any Beatles fan.
review 2: After a really bad day, Regina makes an innocent wish to be as famous as The Beatles. When she wakes up, her wish has come true, she and her band, The Caverns, have become the new Beatles. She has six days to live this dream life and make a choice between her old world and the new one. Will she want to give up a hot, famous boyfriend, fame and money? The answer won't really come as a surprise, but the ride is interesting. less

Cute if predictable. More like a 3.5
