review 1: I really loved the characters and setting. The idea of osteomancers basically engaging in cannibalism to gain more power is, frankly, very creepy and added a whole 'nother level of tension to an already action packed novel. As I neared the end, I started thinking it was going to end in a cliff hanger (I knew going in that it was first of a trilogy, though nothing on the book cover says as much) because it seemed like too much needed to happen to wrap things up with only 20 pages or so left, but Mr. van Eekhout masterfully wove the various threads of the story together by the time I reached the last page, while still leaving several open to further exploration in the next two books.
review 2: OK, this was a grisly heist story. Basically this universe is powered
... moreby the magic in bones. All sorts of bones. From Fido the family pet to the fossils residing in tar pits. Right down to clippings of hair and fingernails and baby teeth. In order to acquire this power you need to ingest the bones. The world is running out of available bones, so the most powerful are trying to capture and eat each other. But there is a rumor that the most powerful overlord has a super secret stash that a super sneaky thief could steal... less

Strange and interesting, and violent, with touches of humor. And I smell a second book coming ...

It was ok - had the Jim Butcher or Simon R. Green vibe - I won't remember it in a month.
