review 1: A touch of science fiction in the Battle, but while this book is targeted to a little lower reading level, I found the story sadly lacking. The plot was fairly boring and even the action didn't do much for me (although I suspect kids will appreciate it more than I did). Overall, I wasn't impressed by the story or the story telling, but it does generally keep moving forward, always having something happening.
review 2: We think we're so smart sometimes. In our first world smugness, we have figured out how to move in and out of artificial atmospheres so we don't get too cold or too hot. We assume we're safe. And we assume technology is going to save us. If we have some kind of problem, it's just a matter of time before technology will solve the problem. But
... morefor every light side, there is a dark side. What happens when the savior becomes the destroyer. And all the ways we thought we were insuring our safety, end up turning on us to eradicate us? When technology develops a mind of its own. Ala "sky net" in the Terminator series. Or in "I, Robot." This is one of the major themes in this novel, written more for a youth audience. Certainly, after reading this book, some kid is going to look at his/her computer paraphernalia with a little more sideways glance. Disaster is upon us, one way or another. The question is not if, but when; and, more importantly, how will we choose to go on, after the disaster is over. when new choices can be made? less
