review 1: This is so hard to review - I loved it, and then I wanted to kick something at the end. The main characters, a brother and sister in Canada, lose their father early in the tale, and are left alone in the world. In order to avoid being sent to a home they decide to travel to the US to find their drug dealer uncle. This one has bits of magical realism, and is often unbelievable, but you root for the characters so much that you're willing to suspend disbelief and keep going. A misfit cast of characters come together to help them along the way. Themes include: Canadian lit, First Nations, disability, magical realism and loss of parent. Juvenile lit, this would be best for older readers in that age range. There is some language (frequent use of "g-d"), and discussion of ... morepedophiles (to be avoided, and often the term is used as a catchall for a bad guy).
review 2: Wild, funny, warm, lovely and very sad. In the midst of a torrent of books featuring feisty girls, the character of Marie Claire “Rat” stands alone. Fearless, charming, determined, bossy, outspoken, compassionate, and fanciful, Rat rushes headlong into adventure. But Rat is vulnerable as well - she suffers from frightening, unpredictable seizures. Her protective older brother, helpless to rein in her enthusiasms, follows her into one unadvised situation after another. Brimming with new York City grit and a vast montage of eccentric characters, the pace of the story matches the frantic pulse of NYC streets, and is just as memorable. less

I think this book is an amazing action packed book, that I would recommend to any kids above age 12.

What an incredibly exhausting and from time to time offensive book.

Entertaining read until the end, which was awful.
