review 1: The idea behind The Future For Curious People is an interesting one. Thanks to medical science people can now envision their future with different romantic partners by hooking your head up to some wires and watching it on a TV screen. So far so good.But the science fiction side of the story soon gets swept away for a quirky romance between an awkward indie boy and a manic pixie dream girl. Both Evelyn and Godfrey have had interesting childhoods but the implications of that aren't explored, nor is the impact of the envisioning aside from a few mentions of addicts.Instead we get overly cutesy romantic gestures that seem straight out of a film. There's a kleptomaniac best friend, so many many mentions of the music Evelyn listens to and then Evelyn giving Godfrey a speech abou... moret how he's a superhero when he fails to save his daughter in an envisioning. So much potential but characters liking quirky things isn't the same as character depth.
review 2: I liked the concept of being able to see your possible futures and how that affects your decisions in the present, but in this book it didn't quite work for me. I didn't understand why first-person narratives in the present tense were used for both main characters; I didn't really seem to add anything. Some of the writing was beautiful, but then there were some ridiculous sentences as well. I had issues with the characters as well, especially with Godfrey and Madge. I didn't understand them, or their relationship. Neither were particularly likeable. Evelyn and Adrian were slightly better, but not by much. I had high hopes when things started to fall apart for the characters, but again, it didn't quite work for me. less
