review 2: The story opens in San Fransisco with an all too brief love affair between a French student (Martin) and an American girl (Gabrielle)......sun, sea and presumably sex; he then leaves to go back to France... more. Ten years later he's a policeman on the trail of a notorious and clever art thief, but his heart is still, guess where....in San Fransisco, just like in the famous Tony Bennett song.It seems just lately I've given only negative reviews, and this is no exception. I don't know if the problem lies in the original writing, or in the translation (from French to English), but I found the style of this book strange and actually quite irritating. Also difficult to pinpoint is exactly what it's trying to be...romance? thriller? chic-lit? I can't see it appealing to men at all...maybe it's not meant to. It's all rather stilted and cliched in style, and whilst I really wanted to settle down to a long, pacy thriller, what I got was a mish-mash which was very lightweight and didn't satisfy at all. less
