review 1: I read like two or three of his books and they were okay, a quick read. But this one was so frustrating and so predictable. I didn't care about the characters at all, Martin wants to be a writer at the beginning of the book and then he breaks up with Gabrielle and becomes a cop, and yeah prior to that he wanted to be a lawyer? And he pays a prostitute but he doesn't think about getting her out of the business and finding her a new job? STUPID. And Gabrielle... I didn't care about her, I didn't know who she was because everything we know about her is that she slept with a lot of guys? And the part in the end when Martin cuts the glass with a diamond? Please, just stupid.
review 2: I really liked this story even though the plot was rather basic. It read easily an... mored at times seemed rather simply structured although I'm not sure if this is due to it being translated it may well read differently if you read it in the language it was written in.The story is mainly a love story. Love between a father and daughter and an old love lost, this a favourite theme of mine, and this book didnt disappoint.Even though the story is full of romance and sentimentality the characters all have enough cynicism and regret to balance the story out keeping it well rounded and believable, it's seeped in realism. I empathised with the characters and there were passages that really struck a chord with how I feel about relationships, love and loss. less
