review 1: How to sum up what makes a man good? Does it have to do with conscious? Loyalty? Honor? This is a book that follows the parallel courses of two men across Canada, into the frontier. Set at the time of the battle of Little Big Horn, it also brings into play the injustices suffered by Native Americans, and the historical personalities of a series of military men on both sides of the border. Playing with the ideas of borders and boundaries is a broad theme of the author's, and he is consummate in dealing with it and other large issues while also telling a story that draws you in. Will Wesley win Ada? Are his secrets too burdensome? And just how evil is Dunne? There are also fascinating details about little known historical events. Didn't know the Fenians launched raids into ... moreCanada. Even had a pitched battle of Irish ex-Civil War soldiers vs. Canadian regiments. Or about Major Walsh and his friendship with Sitting Bull. Enlightening.
review 2: This is actually the last in a trilogy but the first I have read (volume one is now waiting for me at the library). A very good historical novel set on both sides of the border or "medicine line" between Montana and Alberta just after the civil war. I had no idea that there was an active Irish Republican Army in the United States which actually did attack Canada a couple of times and had dreams of annexing parts of it to the United States or how active Southern Conferates where in Ontario. The story centers on the last days of Sitting Bull, the political struggles between the Canadian, British and US governments to deal with the Indians. The tale gets fairly dramatic but these were probably pretty dramatic times. Worth reading. less
