Strange Chemistry
review 1: This was a great YA book with a unique historical fiction tied in with horror. I found both characters likable. They were both full of realistic snark. One of the things I liked was its respectable use of fandom, music and pop culture. Also the father/son relationship was supposed to be all angst-ridden but I wasn't getting that. Sometimes I found their actions al little off for example if the guy your interested in is hearing voices you probably wouldn't worry that he found you weird, and given the things that happened to these kids parents through out the book you would think they'd be a bit more worried. There pacing of the story and suspense worked. While I liked the fact that it didn't entirely focus on their romance I did want more of it especially in the end. But,... more it is worth a read if you like good horror historical fiction and good YA.
review 2: Picked me right up and put me on the island. Bond has inextricably woven the physical details of life on the island into the plot. Her dialogue is tight and vernacular, her characters' POV beautifully used to move the book along. It's well edited, with no excess/disconnected description. The romance/thriller aspects are essential, the historical mystery and revelations are foreshadowed just enough, which I really appreciated. There is fear, courage, and love in several characters; she's made them real. Bond did her homework, and I'll look for more of her writing. less

Interesting plot but the constant pop culture references were annoying.

This really just didn't work for me, on multiple levels.
