review 1: Beautifully written tale of teenage love, old circus glamour (no sad, mistreated exotic animals, just incredibly skilled human artists and some well-loved horses and dogs), magic, and intrigue. I love the complexity of Jules, our female lead, who manages to wrestle with self doubt and indecision without becoming a passive damsel or leaving the progression of the romance in the hands of her male beau. Secondary characters are full of warmth and life and the novel's most tragic moment is well-realized and heartbreaking because of their solid development. I loved all the circus lore and good/ bad luck charms woven into the plot, the sense of wonder our narrator maintains throughout, and the tense, clean descriptions of Jules' wire walking. Also: Bird Millman is an utterly... more fascinating historical character and now I plan to learn more about her. I would recommend this book to most YA fans, and anyone who loves a good circus story. This is YA done right--entertaining, diverse (in more ways than one), never dumbed-down, and eminently readable.
review 2: Gwenda Bond has created an entirely believable world of circus life and those who grow up in it. While the novel is categorized for YA, it appeals to adults, too. Readers will find themselves cheering for Jules and Romeo. It's very much a love story, but with an arc that plays on the desire to succeed and leave a mark on the world. The ending was a bit weak, but everything leading up to it was entertaining, often as tense as the high wire Jules carefully navigated. less

I loved this book! Until it ended. It was very anti-climatic. Would've been 5 stars if not for that

Interesting characters, a slow-building love story and a circus. What's not to like?
