review 1: I enjoyed this work, although as the author noted, the characters are strongly influenced by Patrick O'Brian's series. Furthermore, this book proceeds at a modest pacing developing nicely as an introduction to the setting and a future series. Unfortunately, the final chapters rapidly change the protagonists' standings and escalate the nature of the setting. This step detracted from what was otherwise a good book.
review 2: Ok, nice job on the social dynamics on the ship. I like the leadership angle with a dysfunctional crew and the command decisions that make for a successful war against our non-human aggressors. This book was a lot of fun and I burnt through it quickly. The jargon was nice and the navy connections were compelling. The references to other wo
... morerks were so thinly veiled I found them pretty lame but I bet others found it fun to connect the obvious. Also should note, top notch copy editing! For first time authors that is a rarity and I appreciated it. I'll end on the critical- I don't give a shit about the culinary quirks of the navy on a spaceship; that's at least 20 pages wasted. You guys also dropped the ball wicked bad on the weapons- if there's one thing that will advance in the next 350+ years its small arms! You have got to be kidding with the 45 pistol and the shotguns!?!? There's no technology that moves faster! Step it up on the weapons or you commit yourself to lame. Finally, stop trying to use current companies merged to make your future company products. It just kills suspension of disbelief if you know anything about the actual outlook for the companies you choose. Again we rebrand yearly- every major company in the future isn't going to be some lame ass hyphenated merger between Browning and Beretta. All that said, I'm reading the sequel now so you guys got something very right- but wikipedia isn't a panacea for creativity so go research and design some legit technology advancement!!!! less
