review 1: The writing style of this book was very simple, and not in a good way. The dialogue was incredibly clunky - there were a lot of unnecessary lines like "'Thanks,' I said," and often the same phrases were repeated over and over. At first I assumed the book was originally written in another language and then translated, but that wasn't the case. It's a shame, because the story itself was compelling, and it could have been a much better book. Instead, you're reading about all these atrocities, and you can barely connect with any of the characters, even the narrator. It's all told so clinically, so emotionlessly, like it's just a list of actions and crimes; you're always kept distant from everyone's thoughts and feelings.
review 2: Je fascinující, jak nudná kniha... more se dá napsat o tak zajímavém tématu. Uvědomuji si, že se nejedná o literaturu faktu, ale přecejen jsem čekala, že se o tomto čínsko-japonském konfliktu něco dozvím. Nedozvěděla. Kniha obsahuje jen pár zajímavých pasáží, jinak čtenář jen stále dokola čte o tom, jak vedení univerzity/tábora píše stížnosti japonskému velvyslanci a ten nic nedělá (překvapivě), jak lidé blahořečí ředitelku a jí to není příjemné, co si dali hlavní aktéři k obědu/večeři/snídani, celá jedna kapitola naprosto nesmyslně pojednává o tom, co dostali zaměstnanci k Vánocům... atp. Myslím, že žánr historické fikce má velkou výhodu právě v tom, že si může dovolit skutečné události obohatit o poutavý příběh a učinit tak román opravdu zajímavým, tady se to bohužel nestalo, nejzajímavější částí knihy byl doslov Ladislava Šenkyříka... a nebo jsem to jen nepochopila? less
