review 1: I was leery to start A Good Fall, after my ultimate disappointment with Waiting. I was glad that I did read A Good Fall, as it makes me more willing to seek out other books by Ha Jin. A Good Fall is a series of short stories about the experience of Chinese immigrants in greater New York City. As with any collection of short stories, there is a level of inconsistency in the writing and story telling, however, the stories that were good were extraordinary.
review 2: A series of tales about Chinese immigrants in Flushing, Queens just never really jumped off the page. This is my 4th Ha Jin book, and though I'd recommend The Bridegroom as an outstanding book of short stories and Waiting as a very good novel, A Good Fall never rose above average. The stories are m... moreildly interesting, but the dialogue is a bit stale. Jin's proven to be an excellent writer in other works, but this just wasn't his best. less
