review 1: A joy of a read, the Fractal Prince is the second part to the wonderful story of Jean Le Flambeur. Rajaniemi has crafted a second or third level tale with great care and gusto, full of nods and waves to Sci Fi classics. In this case, it is Roadside Picnic by the Strugatsky brothers. The mutaliban are indeed stalkers, out recovering Sobornost tech to sell and becoming transhuman in more ways than one. But there are also mythical referents like Le Flambeur, the eternal trickster and survivor. Sometimes it seems like it is all surface, but woven beneath the sparseness it's all a wealth of details and finely crafted narrative.
review 2: This sequel goes heavy on the world-building, giving us a glimpse of life on Earth - nad it's strange. Well, The Quantum Thief was... more strange, sure, but this one has a whole parallel mythos of jinni and Secret Names and intricate politicking. I'm not sure I understood all of it, but I still really enjoyed it. Also, Mieli is fast becoming one of my favourite SF characters ever (her romance with Sydän was genuinely moving) but I wasn't feeling Jean as much in this one. Maybe because it felt like he took a backseat to some of the more impressive setpieces. Either way, really looking forward to getting hold of The Causal Angel! less
