The Jean le Flambeur Series
review 1: The last book of Rajaniemi's trilogy just has a little too much of the least plausible parts of the previous books. The All-Defector never really made sense outside of the game-theory joke that is the Dilemma Prison; the Aun never really made sense, period; and this book's innovation, an alternate universe and the highly-quantum-entangled state that will you get you it, doesn't help much in this regard. Also, Mars was definitely the coolest place Rajaniemi came up with for this series, so to have it abruptly dismissed was kind of disheartening. But there's enough action to keep you going, and the central characters -- Jean le Flambeur, Mieli, and the various pellegrinis -- are an underrated strength of the series. (Also, I'm now eagerly looking forward to the LHC start... moreing to collide small black holes.)
review 2: I loved these books, and I plan on re-reading them when I have more time, both to enjoy the sheer exuberance of the story and to look up some of the math and science references the books are peppered with. I particularly liked the reviews by Jasper, and Santiago Giraldo, they sum up my thoughts very well. If you like creative, mind-stretching science fiction, you'll love this story. I can't wait to read more from this author. less
