review 1: Uhmm... I don't know what kind of mushrooms grow in the forests of Scotland, but definitely different than in the Finnish forests. Once I picked it up, this book was hard to read and hard not to read at the same time. Roughly after every other chapter I was tempted to give up, frustrated by not understanding jack squat about anything going on... yet I just could not put it down. The other chapters felt like the most intense and best written SciFi thriller I have ever read. I still can't decide if the author is a lunatic or a genius, but I suspect a little bit of both. All in all, a fascinating reading experience, sort of H.P. Lovecraft goes Clarke or Lem. If you decide to pick it up be sure to not give up during the first few chapters before you make your final judgement a... morebout whether to keep reading...
review 2: I've started this a few times and not gotten into it, but this time I got past the first chapters and read the whole thing in two days. SF often has the problem of how to create worlds that are different enough to be truly alien but still comprehensible -- this book tries to have it both ways by having an almost recognizable world in a totally alien universe. Not sure it always fit together, but the stories of both the thief and the detective are compelling enough to keep me reading. less
