review 1: This edition, translated by Lucas and Paull and illustrated by Szyk is for me the quintessential experience of Andersen's Tales. Some reviewers seem to be commenting on other editions and these vary considerably conveying more or less magical, compelling effect depending (of course) on translation but also illustration. Anyway, this is the very same book that kept me up nights when I first began reading to myself, especially The Red Shoes, The Snow Queen, The Marsh King's Daughter. Re-reading this book so many years later, I more consciously recognize the humorous voice of some characters, especially those humans and animals who help or sympathize with the protagonists. I have no idea if the translators render Andersen's voice accurately, but their work is delightful. ... more I tried to read a more scholarly translation but it was not nearly so lively and poetic. So, re-reading Andersen's Fairy Tales did not disappoint me all these years later, except for one thing: it does not include The Little Mermaid. I would love to hear of others' favorite editions, particularly if they include that story.
review 2: This book influenced me greatly as a young girl to delve into the world of fiction. The copy I have is illustrated by Phyllis Reilly. Published by Beaverbrook Newspapers Ltd Fleet Street London E C4 Made and printed in Great Britain by Wyman&Sons Ltd London Reading Fakenham. I recently saw that a similar copy was auctioned. That means it has become a collectors piece. That makes me feel rather grand. less
