review 1: A quick, fairly comprehensive biography that sheds a lot of light on an often overlooked president. The book starts a little weak, as it is more about the Revolutionary War than about Monroe. I understand the need for context, but it seems to be a little heavy on info that's not about the president. Later, the book really gets into its stride, and I really gained an appreciation of the impact Monroe had on the country. The book is a little too much in love with Monroe at times, and it comes across at times that he can do no wrong. This leads to the author shooting down other great men in our history, especially James Madison. During the War of 1812, Madison is basically seen as a giant wuss, hiding behind Monroe's leg. Also, after a certain point, the doting over Mrs.... more Monroe gets a little old. Yes, she's beautiful. We get it.All in all, an informative book that I'm glad I read, and I now hold Monroe in much higher esteem than before. However, I do think that there would have been better options out there for my inspection of his life.
review 2: An excellent biography of our nation’s 5th President the last of the Founding Fathers. It covers his career from his service as an aide to General Washington during the revolution. His service as a diplomat to France, Spain and England during both Washington and Jefferson’s terms where he helped negotiate the Louisiana Purchase, exceeding his authority as he was only to buy New Orleans and West Florida. His wife helped free the Marquis De Lafayette’s wife from prison during the terror and they helped her and her family escape France. The after returning to the United States he served as Minister of War and Secretary of State to Madison and helped defend Washington DC during the War of 1812. It lastly covers his Presidency which included him issuing the famous doctrine which bears his name. less

Immensely readable bio of President Monroe, yet not quite great. I did enjoy it though.
