review 1: This is a really good book that provides several insightful snapshots of the important historical events surrounding Monroe's life leading up to his presidency. Although this book is relatively short, and therefore can't quite contain the depth needed to really understand Monroe's personality, the author is able to put many of his actions into the nation-building context to which the title alluded. Overall, this book is very entertaining and provides a fulfilling introduction to the country's fifth president.
review 2: Very well-written and enjoyable book about our fifth U.S. president, respectively. While Mr. Unger's analysis does oftentimes seem more like a hagiography filled with notable adulation, he does bring the story of James Monroe to life from start t
... moreo finish that many are seemingly unfamiliar with and ignorant of his key accomplishments and overall significance. I would recommend this book to other readers to learn more about this "plain and gentle man." less
