review 1: As the story opens, Nina eerily watches a pregnant woman named Emma as she plays in the park with her toddler. Privy to Nina's thoughts, we learn that the two have crossed paths before and that she is both "scared of seeing her" and scared that she'll "never see her again." Nina quickly begins to orchestrate a series of thought-out, devious, and manipulative events to ingratiate and obtain entry into Emma's life with remarkable success. Events that seem innocent to the casual observer, but are in effect so cold and calculating that you know you are dealing with someone deranged and that things most likely will not end well. Her by Harriet Lane is a rather cerebral thriller. The story is told in alternating viewpoints between the main characters with the majority of th... moree story composed of their thoughts and interpretations of events. The story is written with extreme attention to detail and as a result, the story is very drawn out. I kept waiting for something big to happen and for an explanation as to Nina's motives. Unfortunately, none of this is revealed until the very last pages and at that point, the story just seemed to halt abruptly. After investing the time in reading the novel, I expected more of a return from the ending. Had I known going into the book that this was the case, I might have enjoyed the book a bit more. Thank you to Little, Brown, and Company and Netgalley for the advance reveiw copy.
review 2: It was a bit slow, and tedious, and I worked out what was going to happen within a few chapters just waiting to find out the 'why'. Then when I did discover the motivation for the event felt it such an over-reaction so unrealistic it nose-dived for me Im afraid. I was expecting something 'more' with the sticker on the front claiming 'thriller of year' not gritty enough for me to get my teeth into Im afraid! less

V enjoyable thriller. I'd have changed the structure to make it less repetitive. A page-turner!
