review 1: I find it difficult to read a book where I dislike every character, but there wasn't one person in this story with a likeable personality; they were all self-centered, brittle and, quite honestly, loathsome. This worked well with Gone Girl - once I realised that the author intended me to dislike both main characters I could get on with the book (and, ultimately, love it). But it didn't work with this story and, consequently, I didn't enjoy reading it. It was well written and the story was quite clever - although ultimately predictable - but it just didn't do it for me. I couldn't even like poor, dead Alys, even though everyone in the book thought she was wonderful. I have another if this author's books on n my Kindle, but I shan't be rushing to rea... mored it!
review 2: I thought the writing and the observations of the main character Frances were beautiful and intricate and the story set up and played out really well. I just found the characters terribly dull and insipid. It was a little vacuous and felt a little crass in terms of climbing the social ladder and why anyone would desire to go to such lengths to escape a morbidly boring existence. But having said that, I enjoyed the writing and the construction. less
