review 1: An almost impossibly solid, broad, sweeping epic that reads something like a classical mythology for the deity of nature. It borrows from literary, religious, fantasy, war chronicle, and science fiction traditions, and makes something more beautiful than all of them. The film "adaptation" (used loosely, as the film covers a mere fraction of the story of the manga, and poorly) did a serious disservice to the depth of character, history, and plot packed into these thousand pages. I couldn't put it down and I can't recommend it more strongly.
review 2: Simply put, this is the best graphic novel I have ever read. I watched the movie a long time ago and was always curious about the manga it was based on. I have watched essentially every Miyazaki movie but this mov... moreie was always one of my favorite. Little did I know that the manga collection had so much more depth. The movie is only a fraction of the world he creates and its only a wonder he hasn't made more movies based on this lush universe. I only hope he has plans to less
