review 1: A fantasy sort of historical fiction, this story is about two stubborn girls in a version of the United States in 1775. Lucy is Colay, an indigenous tribe that is suffering because all of their men have (literally) turned to stone. Snowcap is the Child Governor of a neighboring town made up of criminals from England. Together, can they save the last male Colay baby, Rob, and bring about peace/togetherness? Would be great for talking about indigenous cultures, struggles, colonization with this sweet book.
review 2: This is a good book for older kids. It's classified as "independent reader" at Borders, where I work. Lucy and Snowcap are strong-willed girls on a mission to save Lucy's baby brother. Snowcap is the child governor of Tathennland, an island settle
... mored by English convicts around 1770. Her parents, the governor and his wife, were murdered, and she will become governor when she turns 15. Since her parents' deaths she has been a spoiled brat unliked by all.Lucy is a Colay girl -- the natives displaced by the English -- trying to save her baby brother from turning to stone. A few years earlier, all the Colay men and boys turned to stone as the result of a curse put upon them by an English settler.Lucy has to venture from her home onto the mainland of Tathennland, which is where she meets Snowcap. The Tathnlanders blame the Colay for the murders of the governor and his wife, as well as pretty much every other bad thing that happens on the island less
