review 1: I would love to be called "That Book Woman". So the title of this of course grabbed my attention. It was especially fun since we just returned from a trip to the Appalachian foothill of Kentucky. I could totally picture this setting and this family. Definitely some remote regions for these diligent book women to traverse. In our global plugged in lives today we can hardly imagine this kind of limited access to books.
review 2: I really enjoyed reading this book. That Book Woman by Heather Henson is about a non reader Cal who continually makes fun of his reader sister Lark. This children's picture book is set in rural Appalachia. Being from out of state I really enjoyed that the language of the book was authentic to the place setting. Although due to the "cou
... morentry slang" I'm not sure if I would be able to read this book aloud. I fear that my students would not be able to understand what I am reading. This book could be used during a history of kentucky lesson as a book report. During the book a book woman comes to Cal's house and brings Cal's sister Lark books for free. No matter what the book woman always comes to give the family books. Cal at first made fun of the book woman and Lark but eventually he began to question what was so endearing about a book. After a while Cal asked Lark to teach him how to read. The book woman at the end of the book stated something to the effect of Cal learning how to read was the best payment she could receive. Back in the day families would trade books by a man or woman coming to the house on horse back. Even though I do not think I would be able to read this book aloud to my students due to the dialogue I do believe the overall lesson of this book is crucial for young students. That lesson being that reading is important for all people at all times. less
