review 1: Heather Mackey weaves a wonderful tale with Dreamwood. Imaginative and beautifully written, the characters and story line are engaging. I found the book a refreshing change from insta-action books such as The Hunger Games. I liked how the pace of Dreamwood mirrored the pace of Lucy’s journey to find her father, increasing in suspense and making the story ever-more engrossing. I also loved some of the lessons that Lucy learns along the way—lessons valuable at any age. Beware of those who flatter you; they rarely have your best interests at heart. No one’s perfect; you don’t have to be right all the time. It’s OK to be vulnerable and admit when you’re afraid. It is truly a delightful book—one I look forward to reading and gifting again and a... moregain.
review 2: Even though this book was published under the imprint of Penguin Young Readers Group, I found this book to be very enjoyable and very refreshing even though I am long passed what would be considered a "young reader". This is a truly original story that isn't riding on the coattails of the latest "hit" or trend. This heartwarming story portrays both the female and male lead characters as strong, smart, and capable yet with human frailties. It is very suspenseful in areas and will definitely keep it's readers entertained. It's spunky characters, inventive gadgets with minor paranormal elements and interesting plot will keep most readers enthralled. I liked how descriptive the text was - I could imagine every scene vividly. It presents lessons of trust, loyalty, friendship and determination. Bravo on Ms. Mackey's debut and to her publisher for taking a chance on a story that didn't hop on the dystopian bandwagon. I can see this being optioned for a film.
