review 1: A refreshing and practical book that I think could work for a variety of parenting styles, but that draws from Alfie Kohn and similar people I deeply identify with and draw from as a parent. I have some minor quibbles and things I need to reflect on a bit, but the general ideas are good ones, based in understanding child development and in respecting kids as having rights just as their caregivers do. There are ideas in here that I think work better in a group or preschool setting, but they provide a framework for thinking about how you do things at home. For those who particularly want to know precisely What To Do, this book offers many concrete examples and helpful lists of things to say (and words to avoid). Some of these things are already in place in our house, but th... moreere are some ideas I will be trying out or practicing, and it's going on my partner's reading list too. :)
review 2: loved this book. there were definitely some techniques in here that totally helped me help my daughter through her twos. my god, i would take any help i could get. most everything in this book makes sense to me and helps me meet my kid's needs without having unnecessary battles. i love the communication stuff. it's a quick and easy read, which doesn't explain why it took me 3 months to get thru it, but with a toddler and a baby that's actually pretty fast. i've used the advice and philosophy in this book to help choose a preschool as well. and since it pretty much covers all of the preschool years i'll be using it as a reference the next few years. only 4 stars because as practical and reasonable as some of the advice is, it doesn't ALWAYS work with a two year old. but that's not really the book's fault, i think that's just a two year old. doesn't matter how many tricks you have up your sleeve, sometimes they are just too tired or cranky or hungry to keep it together. i wish the author would just admit that once in a while. might make for some comic relief. less
