review 1: Brilliant writing confounded, in part, by a bizarre and byzantine plot involving warring psychics, plastic surgery aficionados, a missing avant-garde filmmaker and a group of women who willfully "disappear" after crafting poetic videos announcing their intentions. At the center is Julia Severn, a young gifted psychic searching for answers as to why her mother committed suicide. Her near-masochistic questing gives a narrative momentum to what really is a meditation on mothers and daughters, the nature of mentorship, oppression and the grip of history. Intriguing, but flawed.
review 2: About - but also felt like - an actual psychological attack. Thus is the M.O. of Julavits, though, so I was prepared. Normally I am concerned about how much doesn't seem to be goin
... moreg on in others' minds, but naturally after a reading of her work, I am distracted by a more troubling concern about what might be going on in my own. I really don't want to turn into my mother. It doesn't take a psychic to see it'll happen anyway, I guess, or at the very least that I'll never actually be who I want to be merely because of her existence. less

I do not know what happened. As interesting as this one started out for me, it fell completely flat.

Totally bizarre. A good read but not for everyone. Paranormal and cerebral.
