review 1: I think this book could have been condensed to 20 pages. I kept waiting for it to get better... When I (finally) got to page 100, I checked its reviews on Goodreads - saw that it got 4/5 stars and thought, "OK, I must be really close to where it gets really good!" so I kept plugging along. When I got to page 182 it finally got interesting... for about 20 pages... then boring again. Oh well... At least it gave me another insight to Stalin's regime.
review 2: This story concerns a family ten years following the siege of Leningrad as they move through the last years of Stalin's dictatorship. The main character is caught up in a plot of exterminate Jewish doctors throughout the country. Although he is not Jewish he has been obligated to provide medical care for a ... morepowerful apparatchik's son. When the son's health continues to fail the doctor must take the blame and is renounced. The scene of his arrest during the early morning hours is tremendously painful to read. It is a very powerful story of the continued perseverance of the Russian people. less
