review 1: Part of the problem with this book is the problem of Emma herself. It's hard to figure her out as a historical figure, particularly since so much of what we know about her was written by less than sympathetic chroniclers. Hollick does a relatively good job of coming up with the answers to "why on Earth did Emma do that?." She also does a very good job with the vast cast of secondary characters.
review 2: Wow...what a surprise. I had never heard of Emma of Normandy, wife and mother to kings. Emma of Normandy (985-1052) was the wife to two Kings of England and the mother of two more. Obviously, there are many holes in the historical data from Emma's lifetime but there are pieces, hints, and bits. Author, Helen Hollick, does a good job weaving it together. I
... morethoroughly enjoyed the story although I did get bogged down several times when the storyline ventured away from Emma. There are many characters and the names & titles can be confusing but overall, this is well done. The Forever Queen begins when Emma is 14 and preparing for her first marriage, to King AEthelred, and ends as Emma is nearing 50 and preparing to let the past go and begin again...as she had to do multiple times throughout her life. I purchased the second book in the series(I am the Chosen King) within minutes of finishing the first. less

More like 3.5 stars. Points off for ragged writing but the story is undoubtedly fascinating.

Emma, according to my ancestry.com genealogy is my 28th grandmother.

Didn't finish it...her writing style was a little too much for me.

Promising, but often tedious.
