review 2: Unlike much of the Scandinavian crime fiction being written today, Helene Tursten’s psychological mystery series does not rely on place. Had we not been told that the setting is Goteborg, Sweden, you could easily imagine any contemporary Western mid-sized city. Her emphasis is entir... moreely on her characters. They are so realistically written that they practically move in with you as you read, creating an experience as engaging as theatre in the round. The action is cerebral for the most part, although Inspector Irene Huss, who holds a black belt in jujitsu, does get an opportunity to defend herself. Her colleagues, family members and suspects are all fascinating people, too, with all their strengths, weaknesses and behavioral quirks. Red herrings are subtly introduced into the mystery, but even if you guess the murderer, the solving of the crime is still very entertaining. less
