review 1: Discovering a heretofore unpublished (in English) Wallander story is like coming home from a vacation and crawling into your favorite reading chair with coffee and a snack.Written originally as part of a book giveaway contest in Denmark, this short novel sits right before the last one in the Wallander series. The detective is living in his apartment with daughter Linda, now a young officer on his police force. They have their usual contentious relationship, but their love is apparent nonetheless.Wallander has been thinking about buying a home in the country, and his colleague Martinson suddenly presents him with the opportunity, a relative's old farmhouse. When Wallander visits for a look-see, all goes smoothly until he realizes that the protrusion he stumbled over in the ... moreback garden is a skeletal human hand and arm. That turns the story into a cold case mystery, one that Wallander eventually solves, but not without risk to his life.As always, the slushy, cold fall landscape of southern Sweden, Wallander's self doubts and tendency toward moroseness, and his dogged persistence in following his leads make this the comfort food of my mystery reading life. And now, I haven't let a single one go by.
review 2: This Wallander novel is set, in chronological terms, just before A Troubled Man, so anyone who has read the last Wallander novel in the series (ATM) will know how his career ends, and there are hints of this in An Event in Autumn. It's well paced and a quicker read than some of the others in the series, as it's a novella. We find Wallander looking at a farm close by his late father's place. After almost deciding to buy it, Wallander stumbles across a hand sticking up out of the dirt in the adjacent garden. So begins a mystery that has him 'digging' not only into the garden but into events from the early 1940s. Always determined to solve the mystery and bring the guilty to justice, Wallander ends up with his own life in danger. Like many fans, I was glad to meet up one last time with my old friend. less

Nice quick read. Not Mankell's very best, but great for reading in bed when you're sick.

Excellent as a novella. Would be better if a full length novel.
