review 1: I have not read every Henning Mankell novel that features Kurt Wallender, but I’ve read a few. And they are consistently engaging. The plots are strong with just enough twists to keep the reader on their feet. They often range beyond the small Swedish city where Wallender is on the police force to other cities and often other countries. Wallender is a fascinating study of the conflicted protagonist. Though I could do without his nagging daughter, Linda, hanging around all of the time, he is still a captivating, smart, self-reflective detective. This story has Linda as a peripheral character involving the missing father and mother of her boyfriend who is also the father of Linda’s child. The story involves a lot of people who are not telling the whole truth. It also inv... moreolves state secrets and the possibility of someone being a spy for another country. The story unravels at a quick pace and is very enjoyable to read. What is difficult is to see the 60-year old Kurt Wallender start to face his own mortality. He has memory lapses. And these lapses come more frequently and last longer as the book continues. He does not die in this novel, but his death is foretold and it is obvious that this is the last Kurt Wallender novel. I don’t know if Mankell is tired of writing about Wallender or is looking for greener pastures and new characters. But is still very sad to see a character that one has followed for years start to fall apart due to Alzheimer’s disease. I enjoyed the novel and greatly enjoyed the Wallender series. If someone is new to Henning Mankell’s work, this is not the book to start with.
review 2: A good wallender. I'd kind of got tired of the wallender series, it had got a little predictable and the stories seemed to focus to much on him. This book, you still have his life as an important part of the book but it didn't feel like that took over the story. It gave a good background to the character of Kurt while the main story went on. I'd have prefered the main story not to have centred on his daughters partner but in the end it didn't feel too much and the motivation this gave Kurt felt real. less
