review 1: Quite an enjoyable read. Very strong with setting as symbol/metaphor - "Standing alone out there on the pier, in the bitterly cold wind, I started to cry. Every single door inside me was swinging back and forth in the wind which seemed to be getting stronger all the time." Elegant word choices (much of that must have to do with the translation). Rather an unsympathetic hero but one whom I found myself cheering on as he tried to sort out his life and find his soul. Interesting how many of the characters surrounding him on the journey were women; Mankell does them well. There is much to be said about the merits of getting the anthills out of the house before it's too late; and, of course, much to be said about the joy of having Italian shoes (myself, I only wear Ecco... more!!!).
review 2: Fabulous! As with The Odyssey, or A Christmas Carol, a story of redemption and self awareness. The story has similar structure to these works in that there is "travel" and engagement with people and adventures along the way that help the protagonist become aware of his shortcomings and to grow and understand himself. Although it was a typically grey Mankell story, there was much more light in it than any other book I have read by him. I especially liked the living on an island/no man is an island theme. I appreciated the strong women in the story as well. less
