review 1: Not as good as some of his other work, but still head and shoulders above most English noir fiction. The story starts off strong, and the centuries-spanning narrative is pretty engaging, but there is a bit of a disconnect between the page and the reader; I wasn't quite sure whose story it was, because of the fractured narrative, and by the end I really didn't care all that much. It was a pretty enjoyable ride though, up until the final few pages, which really left me wondering why even the best writers struggle with endings sometimes.I've recommended it before, but have to plug it with every review I Mankell's writing: his young adult series about Joel Gustavson, starting with Bridge to the Stars, is one of the best reading experiences I've ever had, so I will continue ... moreto pick up his later works.
review 2: The book is worth adding to your "wanna reads for the summer" if you have this interest...sometimes the hard earned interest in....the Scandinavian ilk of erstwhile dour authors....From those who are tattooed or dragon lovers to those who are headhunters or leopard lovers alike the effort is in this case worth the candle.That said,this one is a stand alone work (not one of a series) that tries and even succeeds to scan and span a rather broad range of cultures...time frames and histories / perspectives as it meanders towards the conclusions and the implied implications of the costs and prices paid for revenge. Sometimes a trudge but its over now and was worth it. less
