review 1: This is really an excellent detailed description of how a software team evolved an effective system of operation using physical Kanban boards and the Lean, XP and scrum philosophies of development. It is full of interesting observations about the process and tips and guidelines that have emerged. The surprising importance of WIP limits are emphasised to effectively improve the cycle time and velocity of development. Simple measurements of velocity and cycle time based on the physical Kanban are also described. I filled the book with sticky page marks for interesting, thought provoking comments and references such as:"Unmerged branches (or diverging code) are a form of technical debt..." which I will try consider in my everyday development. The last section contained gener... moreal descriptions of Lean, XP and SCRUM and also cause effect analysis. The main downside of the book for me was the bad images which were hard to see and the lack of colour to highlight detail. Given the significant visual impact that is an important part of a kanban the bad quality visuals in the book were disappointing.
review 2: A great case study that shows how a real team working on a real project used agile, how they modified it as needed. It makes a strong case that your actual process isn't as important as how you incrementally improve your process. Also, each attempt at improving your process should be viewed as an experiment, and experiments are expected to fail sometimes; it just means you need to re-examine your hypothesis and try a different experiment.Overall, the book had a lot of insights that could be applied to any team on the agile spectrum. It's an easy and enjoyable read, so there's really no downside to picking it up. less
