review 1: River, Freak, and Fiona are sort of friends who live in the middle of a mostly abandoned neighborhood with an underground coal fire. One morning at the bus stop they find an old, abandoned sofa on the couch near their bus stop. Digging through the cushions reveals a green 'zucchini' crayon, a domino, a double-headed coin, and a fish hook. It turns out that the owner of the sofa is from another planet and he needs help to keep Earth from being taken over by a greedy alien. If you like the title of this book and off-beat science fiction, you'll like finding out how River, Freak, and Fiona save the world.
review 2: Laughed out loud and enjoyed the twists and turns of this fantastical adventure. One thing that I particularly appreciated was the fact that one o... moref the characters has an alcoholic father -- appreciated in the sense that it may help a child who is in a similar situation. The father was portrayed in a realistic fashion -- not overly anything but bad enough to ultimately warrant Child Protective Services getting involved. less
